After three days of Nobel prizes honoring work in the sciences, the literature award is being announced by the Nobel Committee at the Swedish Academy.

South Korean writer Han Kang has won the Nobel Prize for literature, the Swedish Academy announced on Thursday, for her “intense prose” that “exposes the fragility of human life.” She is best known internationally for her novel “The Vegetarian,” about a woman who believes she is turning into a plant, which was translated into English in 2015.

The honor, one of the five Nobel Prizes established by the will of Alfred Nobel, the inventor of dynamite, went to the South Korean novelist for "her intense poetic prose that confronts historical traumas.
